Retweet of the Day - October 10, 2013

The New York Giants travel to Chicago to face the Bears tonight on NFL Network's Thursday Night Football. The Giants are off to an inexplicable 0-5 start. Plagued by defensive miscues, the lack of a running attack, and an untenable number of turnovers. Eli Manning (1,482 yds., 8 TD, 12 INT, 54% comp.) has thrown 12 picks in five games, though many were after the Giants were behind and making riskier passes later in games.

Still, prolonged struggles for high profile athletes always charge up the Twittersphere. Today's retweet, by Blaise Miller (‏@BlaiseInKC) makes Manning the butt of yet another sports quip:

"Reports day Eli Manning is getting extra work in and is already at the Bears practice facility playing catch with Chicago defensive backs."

He has made this face a lot this year.

The start of the National Football League season is the beginning of a harvest season of sorts for people who write about sports. It's the time when much less brain energy is required to think of thing to write about. If there isn't a compelling story of interest, the NFL serves up 14 to 16 buffets of subject matter from which to choose each week.

I could pick several angles for today's retweet, but the nation saw the New York Giants travel to Big D on Sunday Night Football and drop their first game, ever, to the Dallas Cowboys in Jerry World. The story of that game was the turnovers: Eli Manning threw three interceptions, including one on the first play from scrimmage of the game, and lost three fumbles. The Giants may truly be the better team, but when you turn the ball over six times on the road, you all but certainly lose.

Today's retweet is from someone Blaise Miller (@BlaiseInKC) who is becoming a regular on the retweet of the day and has an astute perception of the workings of the Twittersphere:


"Some guy is counting the minutes until tomorrow morning so he can tweet, "The Giants have just committed another turnover."" 

They actually had something to cheer about against the Giants.

Orenthal James Simpson is the gift that keeps on giving to the Internet. Simpson was in court recently to petition for a new trial on his kidnapping and armed robbery convictions, for which Simpson was convicted in 2008 is serving a minimum of nine years and a maximum of 33 years in a Nevada state prison. The case was reopened in court last year. Simpson is alleging ineffective assistance of counsel.

That isn't the real news. The real fodder is that Simpson has gotten...fatter...MUCH fatter. He appeared in court in a size 5X jumpsuit. That prompts us to today's retweet from Blaise Miller ‏(@BlaiseInKC):

"OJ Simpson showed up in court looking fat. Apparently he's been looking for the real killers in the prison cafeteria."

I think he found the guy in the mirror over the sink before washing up.

Baltimore Ravens quarterback and Super Bowl XLVII Most Valuable Player Joe Flacco signed a new contract that will make him a very wealthy man. The six year, $121 million contract is reportedly the most lucrative in NFL history. With that new found wealth, Flacco can afford the luxuries and frivolities that many f us would not consider purchasing with a mere working person's salary.

One premium product I never purchased were the rookie cards of high profile athletes (I either got then in my packs or didn't get them at all). Rookie cards for a garden variety star easily sell for upwards of $100. Sure fire Hall of Famers...upwards of $500 and so on. Today's retweet is from Blaise Miller (@BlaiseInKC), reminding us of how precious a coveted rookie card can be.

The Dallas Cowboys fired unfashionably presented Defensive Coordinator Rob Ryan on Tuesday. Ryan is known for his bloodline, brother of New York Jets Head Coach Rex Ryan and son of retired NFL coach and former defensive trailblazer Buddy Ryan. He's also known for his slovenly appearance and the fact that none of his defenses have ever reached the playoffs.

Future Hall of Fame NFL wide receiver Terrell Owens was signed by the Seattle Seahwaks to a one year, $1 million deal today. Owens played his last down in the NFL during a personally productive 2010 season (72 rec., 972 yds., 9 TD, 14 games played) with the collectively bad (4-12) Cincinnati Bengals. Owens injured his knee late in the 2010 season and missed the entire 2011 season rehabing from surgery to repair the ACL in the knee.

Since then, his money problems have been much publicized. Owens has appeared on the Dr. Phil Show, admitting that after earning $80 million in his playing career, he is broke. So, of course, the Twittersphere was loaded with poor jokes directed at Terrell Owens. Take this dandy, by Blaise Miller ‏(@Blaise_in_KC)
