Rose Colored Lenses

Former NBA MVP and Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose kicked the sports-talk ant hill last week when he commented that he was sitting out of games to avoid long term health problems. Rose, who has suffered two serious knee injuries, one in each knee, since the first game of the 2012 playoffs. Rose missed nearly all of the past two seasons due to the injuries.

Last week, Rose said regarding sitting out games, "I think a lot of people don't understand that when I sit out it's not because of this year. I'm thinking about long term. I'm thinking about after I'm done with basketball. ... I’m thinking about long term. I’m thinking about after I’m done with basketball. Having graduations to go to, having meetings to go to, I don’t want to be in my meetings all sore or be at my son’s graduation all sore just because of something I did in the past. [I'm] just learning and being smart."

I don't understand why he didn't finish the game. What a sissy! 1
WHAT WAS SAID AND WHAT WAS MEANT

Rose was immediately, vigorously, and almost unanimously criticized for his remarks by sports media and former NBA players, most notably outspoken Basketball Hall of Famer Charles Barkley. The narrative generally was along the following line: Rose is paid roughly $20 million per year to play a game. He sounds like an out-of-touch whiner when people with less desirable and more physically strenuous and/or dangerous, occupations that often offer more value to society's basic existence and progression as a whole earn far less, some living paycheck-to-paycheck. For those reasons, he should never publicly complain about his physical concerns for his body.

Athlete envy grates my nerves to no end. Everyone is dealt a different set of cards and everyone has to manage his or her own life based on the circumstances and opportunities in his or her life. For anyone raising his blood pressure beyond a normal level from annoyance by an off-putting comment, my (likely unpopular) response is: tough shit.

There are cops who go to work on crutches. He can't at least shoot some free throws. If that happened at MY job (insert stupid, self-righteous blathering from a fat slob with no ambition and half of Rose's work ethic)! 2
GET A LIFE; ROSE HAS ONE

The "controversy" brought on by the Rose comments has taken a life of its own. I could understand some rumblings by Chicago area fans whose patience as fans may be thinning from the former MVP's absence holding the Bulls back from possibly winning a championship. The nationwide "outrage" is ridiculous to me.

At worst, Rose is guilty of being a little tone deaf, especially after doubling down on his remarks later in the week. Rose is not a public relations or communications professional. He's a basketball player. He isn't paid to deliver well crafted, fan friendly statements on the fly when asked about his body and his career. The bottom line is that he suffered two significant, potentially debilitating injuries that robbed him of two years of his career and he is going to be careful. Whether he used terminology about being "sore" while envisioning and attempting to quickly articulate future situations in his life in which he could be in pain from aggravating his injuries or simply said, "I'm concerned about long-term consequences from short-term overexertion," is irrelevant.

Former pro athletes know that their bodies are their money makers and should consider backing off a bit. People in the media are fanning the flames to have a discussion topic and should demonstrate a greater depth of their ability to engage their audiences with their opining skills. Members of the public venting outrage through sports-talk radio and the Internet need to look at themselves in the mirror. If your job shoveling horse crap doesn't give you the options that Rose has from playing basketball, learn to play basketball and an elite, world class level or worry more about bettering your own lot in life You come across as pathetic.

I'm in complete agreement with Joakim Noah (comments in this clip). 3

Retweet of the Day - October 29, 2013

The 2013-2014 NBA season begins tonight. There are two nationally televised games on TNT tonight. Both are marquis headliners, the late game being the Golden State Warriors at the Los Angeles Clippers.

Today's retweet needs no explanation and today's retweeter needs no introduction.

Earvin Magic Johnson (‏@MagicJohnson):

"Can't wait to see the Heat get their rings and then play the Bulls. LeBron James vs. Derrick Rose!"

Wow. The NBA just happened to schedule the Bulls at the Heat on the first night of the season!

Retweet of the Day - August 13, 2013

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin, III recently made headlines by saying that he wanted to play in the preseason, even though he has not been allowed thus far. Griffin is recovering from a knee injury (A.C.L. strain or tear) sustained late last regular season, probably aggravated in a first round playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Griffin is a rapidly rising star in the NFL, with a very high ceiling. In contrast, NBA 2011 Most Valuable Player Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls tore his A.C.L. in his knee in the first round of the 2012 NBA Playoffs. Rose was cleared to return to basketball late in the 2013 regular season, but elected to remain on the sidelines through the end of the season.

I am not criticizing Rose. An athlete's body is his money maker. But there is a contrast in the approach to recovery from an injury and returning to play between these two star athletes.  Joe Schuh ‏(@_SchuhFly) summed it up well in a tweet to ESPN's Scott Van Pelt and Ryan Russillo:

"@SVPandRussillo This RGIII story is the polar opposite of the D-Rose story earlier this year"

Nobody would fault him if he wanted to take it slowly.

Must See Sports – Fourth Weekend of March 2013

Last two week's advantage/disadvantage record: 5-4
2013 Advantage/Disadvantage Record: 12-9

The NCAA Tournament is underway. The Hat Trick weighed in on the Big Dance yesterday and will discuss the regional semifinals and finals in next week’s “Must See”. With college hoops off the menu, this week’s edition is limited to the pros.

Sunday, March 24

PGA Tour

Arnold Palmer Invitational – Final Round

Tiger Woods needs to win a major tournament to shake the post-Elin monkey off of his back for good. But there has been a clear improvement in his game going back to last year. Woods is the defending champion at Bay Hill in Orlando, Florida. He got off to a solid start this afternoon, shooting a 69. He is four strokes back of Englishman Justin Rose, who shot a 65. Rose has been cracking the top ten with more regularity since 2012, but only has two tournament wins since 2011. His lead can be overcome.

Out with the old and in with the new, Lindsey Vonn. 1

NBA

Los Angeles Lakers at Golden State Warriors

The Lakers rescued themselves from early season doldrums to put themselves back into the Western Conference playoff picture, currently in 8th place in the West. On paper, the Lakers are among the hottest teams in the West, with a 19-8 record since February. In practice, this team is on track to be swept out of the first round of the playoffs.

They don't play defense well and point guard Steve Nash (13 PPG, 7 APG), between injuries and discomfort with Head Coach Mike D’Antoni’s scheme, has yet to “go Steve Nash” for any sustained period. In my opinion, he is the Lakers’ “X-factor”.  Their “hot streak” has also been more of a “warm streak”. Sure, they have won 70% of their games since February, but against teams currently among the top eight in the Western Conference? They're 0-3.

Golden State is a young team on the rise under Head Coach Mark Jackson. They are currently in a dogfight to hang on to sixth place in the West with the Lakers, Houston Rockets, and Utah Jazz on their tales. They have almost no shot of reaching fifth place. They have climbed back on the horse after being rattled by a six game losing streak in February. Recent losses, in March, to the Milwaukee Bucks and Philadelphia 76ers have probably stifled fan confidence in this team, but with a scoring machine like point guard Stephen Curry (22 PPG, 7 APG, 4 RPG), they're capable of competing with any team.

Golden State is at home and the Lakers’ road record against quality Western Conference teams is not good.

Advantage: Warriors

The Lakers need Nash to be MVP-like down the stretch. 2

NBA

New York Knicks at Boston Celtics

I could label this game “Fool’s Gold at Old Gold”. The Knicks are the worst post All-Star break division leading team I've seen in quite some time. This is a team with three frontcourt players with 8-figure salaries in small forward Carmelo Anthony (27 PPG, 6 RPG), power forward Amare Stouremire (14 PPG, 5 RPG), and center Tyson Chandler (11 PPG, 11 RPG). Yet they cannot seem to play well together. When Anthony or Stoudemire have been out due to injury, the Knicks appear to win more games more convincingly…completely dysfunctional.

The Knicks were on a five game road trip and had their teeth kicked in, going 1-4. They rebounded at home against possible lottery winner Orlando at The Garden last night. The Celtics are aging, but, if anything, they are consistent and play very well at home. The circus that is the Knicks stinks on the road.

Advantage: Celtics

Wednesday, March 27

Miami Heat at Chicago Bulls

Winners of 24 consecutive games, the Heat are must see sports against any opponent. Against the second place team in the Central Division, it becomes more engaging. Considering that former MVP Derrick Rose could possibly play…keep a supply of popcorn on hand.

Rose, who has not played since the 2012 playoffs (knee), has been cleared by doctors to play basketball. Rose recently said that only God knows when he is returning, but the language on Rose’s absence has begun to soften. The Bulls said that he is “likely” out for tonight's game against the Portland Trailblazers. That is a far cry from “no way, no how”. A nationally televised game against the defending champs possibly on the verge of an NBA record winning streak would be an exciting stage for Rose’s return.

There are no guarantees in professional sports, but with the Detroit Pistons, Charlotte Bobcats, and Orlando Magic on the Heat’s schedule before next Wednesday with two of those games in Miami, I would be shocked if the Heat’s streak is not 27 games by the time the Heatles travel to Chicago. While the Heat’s Achilles heel is play in the paint and that happens to be the Bulls’ strength, without the scoring threat of Rose I cannot see the Bulls pulling off the upset. On the other hand, you heard it here first, if Rose does return and plays 30 minutes or more, I think the streak stops in Chicago.

Advantage: Heat (if Rose plays < 30 minutes), Bulls (if Rose plays > 30 minutes)

Chicago Bulls 2012 Season - UH OH!

I, personally, was rooting for the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Playoffs. But I hate to see any contending team get derailed by an injury. That is what happened to the Chicago Bulls toady when reigning MVP and starting point guard Derrick Rose was lost for the season with a torn ACL in his knee.

Adding insult to injury, the tear happened with just over a minute remaining in the game and the outcome all but determined. The Bulls beat the Philadelphia 76ers by double digits.

Earlier today, I said I expected a four game sweep of the Sixers by the Bulls. I am sticking with that. The Bulls are an excellent, well coached team that has won two thirds of its games without Rose in the lineup this season. I expect the dream to end in the conference semifinals at the hands of either the Atlanta Hawks or Boston Celtics, especially if the Celtics advance.

Must See Sports - Second Weekend of March 2012

Last week's advantage/disadvantage record: 4-3
Must See Sports 2012 record: 34-25

Thursday, March 8

NBA

Orlando Magic at Chicago Bulls

If you want to see the difference between a “very good” regular season and an “outstanding” regular season, check out tonight’s matchup between the Magic and Bulls. Derrick Rose (23 PPG, 8 APG) showed the clutch ability that made him the 2011 MVP with his buzzer beating game winning shot against the Milwaukee Bucks last night. The Bulls simply find ways to keep winning.

The Orlando Magic win games, but with the uncertainty of Dwight Howard’s (21 PPG, 15 RPG, 2 StlPG, 2 BlkPG) short and long term future with the team, I don’t think the Magic are reaching their full potential. They won’t until there are some final answers to the short term question. I don’t think they’ll beat the Bulls in the United Center, in large part, because of that.

Advantage: Bulls

Derrick Rose --> Money! 1

Sunday, March 11

NBA

Boston Celtics at Los Angeles Lakers

Arguably the best and most historically significant interconference/interleague rivalry in the history of sports takes center stage on Sunday. Both teams need the win. Neither team would have home court advantage in the first round of the playoffs if the regular season ended today.

The Celtics suffered a 32 point beatdown at the hands of the Philadelphia 76ers last night, snapping a five game winning streak. Not only are the Celtics’ playoff seeding prospects in question, but their confidence could be too. Boston hasn’t beaten an in-conference opponent with a winning record since upsetting the Bulls on February 12.

While the Celtics’ problems can be boiled down to age-related symptoms: they can’t get to the basket enough and they are getting pounded under the boards, the Lakers troublesome dynamics are far more complex. While the Celtics' long time stars appear to be in decline, Kobe Bryant (29 PPG, 5 APG, 6 RPG) is having his best season in the last five years. However, internal strife, triggered by former Head Coach Phil Jackson’s retirement, the hiring of Mike Brown as his replacement, and trade negotiations involving Pau Gasol (17 PPG, 11 RPG), has had the four-time Pacific Division champions looking up at the cross town Clippers in the standings for most of the season.

That said, the Lakers problems are external, not necessarily execution. At Staples Center, I like L.A. (I love it!)

Advantage: Lakers

Kobe hasn't just gotten older; he's gotten better. 2

2012 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament - Selection Sunday

Tune in to CBS at 6pm Eastern time for the big announcements. Bubbles will burst while others will continue to float. The big questions are: who will be the number one seeds and in which regions? Who will be the #1 overall seed.

For what it is worth I think the #1 seeds will go to Kentucky, Syracuse, North Carolina, and Michigan State. Kentucky, Syracuse, and UNC are virtual locks. I know I am reaching a little on MSU and that Kansas probably has the inside track on a #1 seed before Michigan State. It’s a gut feeling. Missouri, Ohio State, and Duke may still have a dog in that hunt, also.

Watching teams celebrate (or not) while watching the tube on Selection Sunday has become an annual tradition. 4

2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament – First Round

In my mind, the “first round” will always be the round of 64, not a First Four involving four should-be bubble teams and four mid-major tournament champions. Then again, in my mind, the Titans of the NFL should still be the Oilers. Still, after Virginia Commonwealth advanced from this round and reach the Final Four last season, this round has significance and is worth watching.

Must See Sports – First Weekend of May 2011

The NBA playoffs are heating up, baseball season is in full swing and, now that the draft is over and the appeals court has issued a stay on the injunction lifting the player lockout, there is as much NFL action as there is life in Osama bin Landen’s body!

Thursday, May 5

It’s Cinco de Mayo! Sound the mariachis and break out the margaritas. If you are going out to party tonight, consider some of the following on the tube to accompany your adult beverages.

Major League Baseball

Colorado Rockies at Arizona Diamondbacks

Two division rivals square off as the first place Colorado Rockies travel south the face the Arizona Diamondbacks. Jason Hammel (3-1, 3.23 ERA) gets the ball for Colorado and will match wits with Ian Kennedy (3-1, 3.92 ERA). Kennedy has been hot of late, including a complete game shutout and 1.64 ERA in his last three starts. He has 32 Ks, already, this season.

The Rockies are 4-1 when Hammel has started in 2011. He, also, has been hot, with a 1.32 ERA in his last two starts. This should be a fun pitching duel and the Rockies fight to keep their healthy lead over the San Francisco Giants in the National League West. Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitski, after homering 7 times in the first 12 games of the season, has gone ice cold, batting .077 in the month of May and not having hit a home run in 13 straight games.

With two hot pitchers facing off, the Diamondbacks playing at home (not hit-happy Coors Field in Denver), and the Rockies’ leading slugger in a slump, I think Arizona has an edge tonight in the rubber match of this three game series.

Advantages: Game – Diamondbacks, Series – Diamondbacks

Friday, May 6

NBA Playoffs

Atlanta Hawks at Chicago Bulls – Game 3

The Bulls recovered last night to tie their series with the Hawks after losing Game 1, and the home court advantage. The Bulls absolutely, positively must win one of the next two games, in Atlanta, in order to maintain a competitive edge over the surprising fifth seeded Hawks. The Bulls were able to bottle up the Hawks’ sharp-shooting guard Joe Johnson in Game 2, holding Johnson to 16 points after he dropped 34 points in Game 1.

Derrick Rose has posted a double-double in both games of this series and the Hawks should be prepared for more of the same. Still, Rose has yet to have a scoring explosion and he is due. After pulling off a minor upset by defeating the Orlando Magic in the first round and winning Game 1 against the top seeded Bulls, I expect the stroke of midnight to come for Atlanta’s Cinderella run soon. Expect the carriage to turn into a pumpkin on Friday.

Advantages: Game – Bulls, Series – Bulls

Congratulations to Derrick Rose, the 2011 NBA MVP 1

Saturday, May 7

NBA Playoffs

Miami Heat at Boston Celtics – Game 3

Boston: You have a problem. The Celtics have fallen behind 2-0 to the Miami Heat and the Heatles now look like who we thought they were, and they are not letting the Celtics off the hook. Neither Dwayne Wade nor LeBron James has been held to less than 22 points and each has eclipsed the 30 point mark during the series.

As well as the Heat have handled the Celtics, the Celtics are still among the best in the NBA and this series is shifting back to Boston. The Celtics’ season, for all practical purposes, is on the line in Game 3. The factor that may tip this game to the Celtics: the return of Shaq.

In all probability, Shaquille O’Neal will be back in action after missing most of the last three months with a calf injury. Even if the Celtics only get 15 minutes from The Diesel, it can provide enough relief to Jermaine O’Neal to tighten the screws on the opportunities of the Heat to penetrate the lane and rebound.

I do not think the Celtics will be swept and I think the Heat will find themselves in a different element on Boston’s home floor.

Advantages: Game – Celtics, Series – Heat

It's now or never for The Big Shamrock. 2

Major League Baseball

Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies

Surprise, surprise…! The rest of National League East resisted the urge to bow down and kiss the ring of the Philadelphia Phillies when much of the media anointed the Phillies as the 2011 NL East champions before Spring Training started. With the Marlins hot on the Phillies’ trail and the Braves still within reach after winning seven of their last ten games, Philadelphia is in a mode, in May, in which every game matters in the division race.

That said, the Phillies are walking the walk. They have yet to lose their 10th game of the season. They are hitting the ball all over the park. Third baseman Placido Polanco is on course for a career year and has been on a tear , hitting .374 this season while Ryan Howard is blasting the ball as always, with 6 HRs and 29 RBIs this season. Howard has reached base TWICE in five of his last seven games. In addition, their pitching staff is squeezing opponents as they were expected to.

The Braves pitching staff is pretty stout itself, with a team ERA barely over 3.00. Jair Jurrjens (3-0, 1.52 ERA) is expected to throw the first pitch in the middle game of this three game weekend series. He has lasted past the 100pitch count in all four of his starts this season, so run scoring opportunities for the Phillies will be precious.

Roy Oswalt will take the mound for the home team. He is looking to rebound after getting rocked, lasting just three innings, in his last start against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Up to that point, Roy O had been a strikeout machine, with 21 Ks in his first 24 innings of action this season.

I like the Braves in this game because of the pitching matchup. Jurrjens has been consistent all season, while Oz was touched up in his last start and has not given the Phillies more than 6 innings in any game this season.

Advantages: Game – Braves, Series – Phillies

The Phillies Phanatic should put the champagne away until September. 3

Sunday, May 8

NBA Playoffs

Los Angeles Lakers at Dallas Mavericks – Game 4

L.A., we have a problem. The Lakers dropped their first two games of this series, at home, to the Mavericks. Historically, this is an omen of doom for a higher-seeded playoff team.

Dirk Nowitzki is averaging a double-double per game. Kobe is…Kobe, getting his points as he always does. That does not tell the story of the series.

What does tell the story is that the Mavericks are averaging over 30 points per game from their bench and the Lakers, including the contributions of quasi-starter Lamar Odom, are averaging less than 20 points from their bench. Excluding Odom’s scoring and the Lakers bench has been non-existent. What does tell the story is that Lakers center Andrew Bynum publicly questioned the trust among the Lakers’ players. What does tell the story is that Ron Artest, who has been relatively in control of his emotions since joining the Lakers, with respect to the rest of his career, is suspended for Game 3 for a little hand-to-face action with Mavs guard Jose Juan Barea in the final minute of Game 2, resulting in Artest’s ejection.

Perhaps Artest was practicing for his career after basketball in professional wrestling. 4
Simply put, the Mavericks have been focused and prepared. The Lakers have not. At the moment, the “* if necessary” tag is next to the schedule for Game 5 of this series. I expect there to be a Game 5, I am just not sure at what point it will become necessary. Heading into Dallas, if both teams copy their efforts from the first two games, it won’t be.

I expect the Lakers to take one of the next two in Big D, because the idea of the two time defending champions being swept from the playoffs is unfathomable to me, but barring an injury to Nowitzki or point guard Jason Kidd, I think this series is all but over. THIS Lakers team is not winning two out of three in Dallas against THIS Mavericks team.

Advantages: Game – Push, Series - Mavericks

Major League Baseball

New York Yankees at Texas Rangers

C.C. Sabathia (2-2, 2.68 ERA) of the Yankees and Alexi Ogando (3-0, 2.17 ERA) squared off on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball in April. The rematch between them and their first place teams is Sunday night. In April, Ogando, in his second season, had a career ERA of less than 1.00. Expecting a lights out pitchers duel, America was treated to a hitting spree, with both starters being touched up for a combined nine earned runs and Ogando’s career ERA having more than doubled by the end of the night.

Still, Ogando averages less than one baserunner allowed per inning pitched. C.C. is still C.C.. The Rangers are at home and that may tip the scales ever so slightly in their favor. Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano (.303, 8 HR, 21 RBI) is having an MVP caliber season and the Rangers are without outfielder Josh Hamilton for a very long time. However the combined efforts for the Rangers of designated hitter Michael Young (.336, 24 RBI) and third baseman Adrian Beltre (.254, 7 HR, 25 RBI) have picked up much of the slack.

Advantages – Game – Rangers, Series – Rangers

C.C. didn't exactly eat the Rangers lunch the last time he faced them. Or perhaps he did? 5

Monday, May 9

Major League Baseball

Minnesota Twins at Boston Red Sox

Francisco Liriano (2-4, 6.61 ERA) will appear in his first start since his historic (and historically ugly) no-hitter on Tuesday night. He and the badly struggling fourth place Twins will face Josh Beckett (2-1, 2.35 ERA) and the Red Sox. The Sox appear to have stopped their free fall from the 0-6 start to this season and need to continue their momentum, having won three of their last four games.

Liriano was on his way to the bullpen, if not the minors, before Tuesday’s no-no. Boston appears to be playing like the team many expected they would be. We can tune in to see if “history” could repeat itself at Fenway, but I would not hold my breath.

Advantages: Game – Red Sox, Series – Red Sox

Could Tuesday's no-no be what Liriano needed to break out of a terrible slump? 6
NBA Playoffs

Oklahoma City Thunder at Memphis Grizzlies – Game 4

This is a very difficult series to predict because, while I think the Thunder are the better team on paper, the Grizzlies are playing efficient, physical basketball. They have a lot of young, up and coming players who have growing confidence and have proven that they can win. I do think that the better talent and the better stars generally win out in playoff basketball. Kevin Durant, without a doubt, is the biggest star. Still, this series could go a long way. I like the Thunder in this series, but I do not have much of a feel for Game 4, nor will I until I see Game 3, the first of the series to be played in Memphis. My gut tells me that these two teams split Games 3 and 4.

Advantages: Game – Push, Series - Thunder

Tuesday, May 10

Dallas Mavericks at Los Angeles Lakers – Game 5 (if necessary)

This game may not even be necessary. I think it will be (see Game 3) and if it is, regardless of whether the series is at 2-2 or 3-1, I don’t think the Lakers drop this game at home, a game that would either save them from elimination or set them up for the kill in a Game 6.

Advantages: Game (if necessary) – Lakers, Series – Mavericks

Major League Baseball

Philadelphia Phillies at Florida Marlins

The Florida Marlins are hot on the trail of the NL East’s first place Phillies, who held a one game lead on the Marlins as of this morning. Josh Johnson (3-0, 1.13 ERA) of the Marlins is throwing his cap into the ring early for the Cy Young award. The first full week of May has yet to conclude and Johnson has thrown 46 strikeouts. He has allowed only one home run all year and opposing batters are hitting a paltry .143 against him. There are some National League pitchers who would spend more time in the batting cage with that low of an average.

Expect a pitcher’s duel in this contest as reigning Cy Young winner Roy Halladay (4-1, 2.14 ERA) gets the ball for the visiting Phillies. Halladay has been spectacular all season long, coming off of a complete game win against the Mets in his last start, in which he struck out 8 and only issues one walk.

This three game series features two teams that are hot, pitching extremely well, and hitting with confidence. Still, I expect the Phillies to be in first place after this series is over.

Advantages: Game – Push, Series – Phillies

Billy the Marlin would be a nice catch for the Phillies. 7
Wednesday, May 11

NBA Playoffs

Boston Celtics at Miami Heat – Game 5 (if necessary)

I think the words “if necessary” in a playoff series could be as powerful as any analysis that one could offer. It tells you that one team has an advantage over the other, so much to the point that all of the games may need not be played to decide a winner. Think this series goes back to Miami, but I also expect the Heat to be in a position to eliminate the Celtics by the time it does. Regardless of what happens in Boston, I do not expect the Heat to drop a fifth game, if necessary.

LeBron, was this necessary? Game 5 might not be. 8

Major League Baseball

St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs

One of the oldest and fiercest rivalries in baseball resumes. The struggling, Jekyll and Hyde like Jake Westbrook (2-2, 6.14 ERA) takes the hill for the NL Central’s first place Cardinals against Matt Garza (1-3, 3.96) and the Cubs, who are in fourth place but in striking distance.

The Cubs are a bit of an enigma, with a team batting average of .271 and slugging over .400, yet having trouble driving runs across. Alfonso Soriano (.257, 11 HR, 21 RBI) is a bright spot, but he is only one man in the lineup. In combination with one of the worst pitching staffs in baseball, the Cubs are lucky to trail the Cards by only 2 ½ games.

Garza is the Cubs best starting pitcher, so far, this season. In spite of Matt Holliday’s (.413, 4 HR, 23 RBI) red hot start to the season and the resurgence of Lance Berkman (.392, 10 HR, 32 RBI), the 35 year old veteran outfielder-turned-first baseman-turned-outfielder again, I think the pitching matchup does favor Chicago in this game.

Advantages: Game – Cubs, Series – Cardinals

MVP Talk, Part 1 - Derrick Rose, LeBron James, and Dwight Howard

I've been a little busy. Can you blame me? 1
Did you miss me, Hat Trick readers? Don’t answer that! :-/

As many of you are aware, I am based in Louisiana and we had a little PAR-TAY in the last week. However, all good things, like the Mardi Gras holiday, must come to an end. That means you get another heaping pile of…yours truly!

With the NBA entering its final month of the regular season, talk of MVP candidates will continue to ramp up. It’s an annual tradition among basketball fans. While we may not get an answer until the middle of April we will get all of the speculation we can handle. Why not ring in Ash Wednesday with the first of a huge two part helping of meatless MVP pontificating from The Daily Hat Trick?

Today, I would like to focus on the three players I think have a realistic possibility of winning the award at the end of the season. The next installment will focus on players that I believe should be in the discussion, but I do not believe have a chance of having the most votes once the rubber hits the road. All of these men are invaluable assets to their teams and the NBA.

Derrick Rose – PG, Chicago Bulls (25 PPG, 8 APG)

The Chicago Bulls, at full strength, have quietly been climbing to the top of the Eastern Conference during the season. They are currently mounting a serious challenge to the Boston Celtics. While the recent recoveries of both center Joakim Noah and forward Carlos Boozer from injury have helped the Bulls reach their regular season potential, they would not be in second place in the East and within striking distance were it not for the leadership and exceptional play of point guard Derrick Rose.

Rose has taken his game to the next level in 2011. He is more than just the best scorer and passer on his team. He is a leader. He is putting the teams and responsibility for winning and losing on his back and it is reflected in the standings and statistics of the players around him. The only criticisms of Rose, while fair, are manageable. He is shooting 44% on the season, a little low, even for a guard. And when he misses, it is UG-LY! And scoring 25 points per game from the 1 position sends up an Allen Iverson like flag that he may be a shoot first and pass second point guard. However, the Bulls have no viable starting 2 in their backcourt and, until Carlos Boozer’s return from injury, I don’t think the Bulls had a clear second scoring option after Rose.

If the season ended today, Rose would receive my MVP vote.

The Daily Hat Trick 2011 MVP, for the moment. 2

LeBron James – SF, Miami Heat (26 PPG, 8 RPG, 7 APG, 50% FG)

Sometimes the media can overhype and overhype and overhype some more, so much to the point where we can become desensitized to the message and anything related to it. The bottom line, though, is if one looks only at the numbers, and not the player’s name or the team (if there were performance stats and no names on the MVP ballots), I think The King is a slam dunk for a third straight MVP. The reason I do not think he will win in 2011 is because of the following:

• This WOULD be the third straight year and the Associated Press, which votes on the award, is averse to such dominance by a single person.

  • I remember, in 1993, when Charles Barkley won the award. In addition to some shrewd self promotion by Sir Charles, many factions of sports media (particularly NBC and ESPN – the only basketball opinions that truly mattered at that time) appeared, to me, to be pushing hard for Barkley to win the award. In 1997, I observed a similar push for the eventual winner, Karl Malone. In both years, I personally would have voted for Michael Jordan.
  • In both years, Jordan would have been a repeat winner of the award (Jordan would have won his third straight in 1993). Jordan led the NBA in scoring, in both seasons, en route to leading his team to a repeat championship (also a third straight in 1993) and an NBA Finals MVP award in both years. In both seasons, there was a push for an all-time great having an MVP-caliber season, who had never won the award prior.
  • I am noticing a smaller-scale push for Derrick Rose, ironically, of the Chicago Bulls. Rose is not yet an “all-time great” and LeBron James is still light years from Michael Jordan in career achievement, hence the smaller scale.

• There has been SO MUCH coverage of the Miami Heat that the press may have had enough of the “Heat Index” and is reluctant to extend the hype to the MVP award.

• The Heat are not well liked. Ever since “The Decision”, which united The King, Dwayne Wade, and Chris Bosh, the Heat have often been portrayed as the NBA’s Evil Empire. To think that the MVP award vote does not incorporate popularity into the criteria is naïve.

• LeBron James is very unliked by many, post “The Decsion”. Every mainstream measure of James’ Q-rating (a measure of popularity) has plummeted since this past July. It is reflected in countless sports editorials, online forums, and talk radio call-ins.

• James is playing on the court at the same time as Wade and Bosh, making it more difficult for defenses to focus as much attention on him as other key players around the NBA. I consider this is the fairest criticism of James’ MVP candidacy.

Except for the last bullet point, none of that…NONE OF IT…has anything to do with what LeBron has done ON THE COURT in the 2011 season. My second place vote would go to LeBron, without hesitation. Depending on what transpires in between now and award time, that second place vote could become a first place vote. At the moment, however, I think that Derrick Rose is more valuable to his team, is doing more with less than James, and the Rose-led Bulls are having a more impressive season than the Heat.

LeBron has a great case that he is still the king of the court. 3

Dwight Howard – C, Orlando Magic (23 PPG, 14 RPG, 2 BPG, 60% FG)

Many pundits are using Dwight Howard’s recent suspension for collecting his 16th technical foul this season as a reason to pass Superman over for the MVP award. I think it is a copout. Some have cited an inability of Howard to control his temper though Magic Head Coach Stan Van Gundy gave an excellent rebuttal to that criticism. However, I would not give Howard my first place vote, either.

Howard is the best center in basketball and the Magic will go as far as he can take them. His numbers are MVP-caliber. I would not vote for Howard not so much because of what he has failed to do. I simply think that what Rose and James are doing, given their circumstances, are more impressive. Howard is a physical specimen the likes of which I have never seen at the center position. Even Shaquille O’Neal, at his peak, lacked Howard’s physique and degree of all-around athleticism. He is going to put up impressive scoring, rebounding, and block numbers.

Yes, he has elevated his play to a higher level this season. But Derrick Rose is leading a team with fundamentally solid athletes, playing disciplined basketball, to one of the top seeds in the Eastern Conference. LeBron James is withstanding the heat (pun intended) of the most intense media scrutiny of a basketball team that I can recall, and playing as well as he ever has in his career, en route to leading his team to a division championship.

The Orlando Magic, on the other hand, are doing nothing that they have not done in the past three seasons. In point of fact, they are not the best team in their own division and they are a long shot to come out of the Eastern Conference playoffs, a feat they achieved two years ago. Howard is not making his team markedly better to the degree of James or Rose and for that reason I could not vote for Howard as MVP, though, at the moment, I expect him to finish third because of his performance this season.

Stan Van Gundy thinks that the guys who drew the techs against Howard had a little of this coming to them, sooner or later. Look at this guy. WHY would you tempt fate (or your long term dental health)? 4
