The Patriots experience the most tribulations of any franchise in the offseason, but they were hardly the only team associated with unflattering headlines. Current San Diego Chargers rookie linebacker Manti Te'o, shortly after he played for Notre Dame in the 2013 BCS National Championship game, found himself faced with a bevy of questions about Lennay Kekua, the fictitious girlfriend of Te'o whom Te'o spoke of often during the 2012 college football season. Kekua was supposedly ill with cancer and died on the same day as Te'o's grandmother.
It turned out that Te'o was the victim of an Internet hoax perpetrated by an obsessed fan named Ronny Tuiasosopo. The tactic is known as "catfishing" and Tuiasosopo got Te'o "but good"! Te'o became a media and Internet punchline for weeks. This sets up today's retweet, by BiggieSmalley (@BigSunsFan)
"I wonder if Aaron Hernandez killed Manti Te'o's girlfriend"
Manti Te'o appears to be recovering from his 15 minutes of shame. Aaron Hernandez? Not so much.... |
