Rafael Nadal of Spain, the 5th ATP ranked men’s
tennis player in the world, fresh off of a win at this year’s French Open that
included a win over #1 ranked Novak Djokovic, made an unexpectedly early exit
from Wimbledon for the second year in a row. Nadal was on the losing end of a
shocking upset at the hands of 135th ranked Steve Darcis of Belgium
in straight sets – 7-6, 7-6, and 6-4. It was first loss, ever, in the first
round of a Grand Slam event for Nadal, who is still suffering from a nagging
knee injury from 2012. Nadal was bounced in the second round of Wimbledon last
year, losing to Czech Lukas Rosol.
The Twittersphere takes no prisoners. Tennis fans around the
world wasted no time in taking a jab at Nadal. Nadal, who often plays with a
trademark headband, drew comparison to another big sports star known for a
similar piece of headgear. Today’s retweet is from Ian Lahay (@IanLahay):
“I was waiting for Nadal to pull the Lebron and shed the
headband in the 3rd set #Nadal #Wimbledon”
It worked out for the guy on the left. |
