Must See Sports – First Weekend of March 2013

Saturday, March 2

NCAA Men’s College Basketball

#5 Miami Hurricanes at #3 Duke Blue Devils

Six words: regular season game of the year!

Miami has been battling all year to show that they are the real deal. They have had the #1 ranking within their grasp, only to fall short of the top spot after being hammered by Wake Forest earlier this week. After losing some early season games against teams that, on paper, did not belong on the same court with the Canes (Florida Gulf Coast and Indiana State), the Canes became the hottest team in the country, ripping off 14 straight wins, including a dethroning of then #1 Duke in January.

Miami's strategy is to out-physical and rough up the opponent under the board and in the paint. However, the key cogs in their machine are the two studs in their backcourt, sophomore Shane Larkin (13 PPG, 4 APG, 4 RPG) and senior Durand Scott (13 PPG, 4 RPG). They are the straws that stir the Hurricane, so to speak.

Duke's success will depend on their seniors, shooting guard Seth Curry (17 PPG) and power forward Mason Plumlee (17 PPG, 11 RPG). Coming off of a court-storming loss at Virginia and returning home, I fully expect the Blue Devils to be "up" for this game. Expect the Hurricanes to leave Cameron Indoor as a tropical depression.

Advantage: Duke

#10 Louisville Cardinals at #12 Syracuse Orange

Both of these soon-to-be former Big East powerhouses have fallen out of the top ten since their meeting in January. That doesn't mean that either is without well justified championship aspirations. Nonetheless, Georgetown wrestled away the top dog's spot in the conference with their win over Syracuse last week and everyone else is looking up at the Hoyas.

Louisville is a very well balanced team that can beat an opponent in a variety of way. All five starters are solid, future-NBA aspiring players. But senior point guard Peyton Siva (10 PPG, 6 APG) has to continue to play with a fire in his belly to go out on top. How much will the Cardinals be up for this road game in a place where the host is coming off of a recently snapped 38 game home winning streak to the aforementioned Hoyas and the guest has a losing record against ranked opponents (with no wins on the road against ranked opponents)?

Syracuse is at home in the Carrier Dome with something to prove and I don't expect lighting to strike twice in one week.

Advantage: Syracuse

Due to time constraints, the remaining Must See matchups will not contain a preview..

Must See Sports – First Weekend of February 2013

Last week's advantage/disadvantage record: 0-2
2013 Advantage/Disadvantage Record: 3-3

It’s Super Bowl Weekend and there is a super week of sports ahead!

Thursday, January 31

NBA

Memphis Grizzlies at Oklahoma City Thunder

As I expected, the Grizzlies cooled off since their blazing hot start to the season. Still, they are in fourth place in the Western Conference and have the best record among all non-division leaders. Memphis continues to excel on defense, but with the trade of leading scorer Rudy Gay (17 PPG, 6 RPG) to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for three role players (Teyshaun Prince – 12 PPG, 5 RPG – being the headliner of the three), one has to question if the Grizzlies will have enough offense to make a run in the postseason.

The Thunder have kept on rolling all year long. While having lost three of their last five, they still have the best offense in the league. They’re at home and facing a big opponent. I expect Kevin Durant (30 PPG, 7 RPG)and company to be ready.

Advantage: Thunder

With the departure of Rudy Gay, Zach Randolph is, without dispute, the man in Memphis. 1
Friday, February 1

NBA

Miami Heat at Indiana Pacers

Behind the play of center Roy Hibbert (10 PPG, 8 RPG, 3 BlkPG), the Indiana Pacers have the best defense in the Eastern Conference. They are very physical and extremely hard to beat at home. This is why I think that, in spite of having the best record in the East, the Miami Heat, whose Achilles heel in physical play in the paint, may struggle. Chris Bosh (17 PPG, 7 RPG) is their only significant physical presence under the glass and in the post area and he is just coming off of a toe injury. This game is ripe for a minor upset.

Advantage: Pacers

The last time I picked against LeBron, I had to eat my words. I suppose I am a glutton for punishment. 2

NCAA Men’s Basketball

#1 Michigan Wolverines at #3 Indiana Hosiers

Four words: game of the year (so far)! Michigan is the #1 team du jour and will visit their Big 10 rival, the preseason #1 Indiana Hosiers. I criticized Indiana for not having a signature win last week, and they showed me with a big win over Michigan State. Indiana junior guard Victor Oladipo (14 PPG, 6 RPG) stepped his game up against the Spartans with 21 points. To beat Michigan, the Hosiers will need a similar performance from him.

Indiana beats opponents by scoring and scoring and scoring some more. The problem is that when they cross a team like Michigan, with guys like Tim Hardaway, Jr. (16 PPG, 5 RPG) who can score from anywhere on the court and a point guard like Trey Burke (18 PPG, 7 APG) who can find an open man from anywhere, the Hosiers will have little room for error. Indiana is a very good defensive team, but I am not sold on how well they can hold the best of the best.

Advantage: Michigan

The Hosiers could use another big performance from Oladipo if they expect to possibly wrestle the #1 spot back from Michigan. 3
#16 Ole Miss Rebels at #4 Florida Gators

Big matchup in the SEC…. Ole Miss is one of the hottest teams in the country, winners of nine straight before dropping a game against Kentucky earlier this week. Senior forward Murphy Holloway (15 PPG, 10 RPG) has emerged at the on-court leader of this high scoring, fast shooting, bang-under-the-boards team.

Florida, like every year, is very good. But they can never reach the summit. They have had the most acute case of Bridesmaid Syndrome of any program I have followed the last three years. This is senior guard Kenny Boynton’s last dance (14 PPG, 4 RPG, 3 APG) and it shows in his play. His rebounds and assist to turnover ratio are as good as they have ever been in his college career. I expect the hustle to continue at home on Saturday.

Advantage: Florida

Boynton knows that his window to win an NCAA title is closing quickly. 4

NFL

Super Bowl XLVII

Baltimore Ravens (13-6) vs San Francisco 49ers (13-4-1)

On paper the 49ers appear to have the advantage in this game. They are the total package: elite running game, elite defense, arguably the best linebacker in the league in Patrick Willis (120 tak., 2 INT), and a passing game that has been suddenly elevated with the emergence of second year quarterback Colin Kaepernick (1,840 yds., 10 TD, 3 INT, 62% comp.). This team has no glaring weaknesses.

The Ravens have no glaring weaknesses either, but there are some aspects of their team that could make you go, “Hmm….” Their defense is solid and smart, but they are not the impenetrable force that they have been for more than a decade. Their defensive leaders are aging. Linebackers Terrell Suggs (8 GP, 22 tak., 2 sacks) and Ray Lewis (6 GP, 57 tak., 1 sack) have missed games and battled injuries all season long. Safety Ed Reed (58 tak., 4 INT, 1 TD) continues to play at a high level, but without the bulletproof linebacking play available all season, he has had to shoulder more of the load than in years past. How this affects the 34 year old, playing in his 20th game of the season, is cause for some concern.

I think Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco (3,817 yds., 22 TD, 10 INT, 64%) is the X factor in this game. If he can get comfortable early against a fierce 49ers front seven and the Ravens offensive line can contain Niners all-everything defensive lineman Justin Smith (66 tak., 3 sacks, 8 tak. for loss), this game could be decided on the final possession. As is, I think the Niners have a bit more firepower coming into the game.

Advantage: 49ers

Opposing defenses haven't solved Kaepernick yet. 5
Wednesday, February 6

#23 Minnesota Golden Gophers at #13 Michigan State Spartans

This game is pivotal for both teams. After being ranked as high as #8 just three weeks ago, the Gophers have retreated to their burrow holes, dropping four consecutive Big Ten games before snapping the streak with a win against Nebraska on Tuesday. Part of the problem was the disappearance of senior forward Rodney Williams (12 PPG, 6 RPG), who shot abysmally and scored below his season average during the four game losing streak.

Michigan State has to go “back to the old drawing board”. Presented with a second realistic opportunity to break into the top 10, the Spartans fell short at Indiana. Junior point guard Keith Appling, the team’s best player, completely vanished in that game, scoring only three points with four turnovers and no assists last Saturday. MSU Head Coach Tom Izzo limited Appling to less than 20 minutes of play because he was so ineffective.

Something has to give and both teams need the win. But Michigan State is at home and the Gophers appear to have awakened from a prolonged coma. I like the Spartans.

Advantage: Michigan State

Keith Appling needs to step his game up from last Saturday. 6

Must See Sports – Fourth Weekend of January 2013

Last 2012 weekly advantage/disadvantage record: 4-4
FINAL Must See Sports 2012 record (excluding series): 84-49
FINAL Advantage/disadvantage record in series, 2012: 12-9-1
2013 Advantage/Disadvantage Record: 3-1

Must See Sports is back after a lengthy layoff.  With the NFL season approaching its end, the hardwood is going to dominate the sports scene for the next couple of months. If you are like a lot of sports fans and been immersed in the NFL, let’s get you caught up.

NCAA Men’s Basketball

(13) Michigan State Spartans at (7) Indiana Hosiers

The winner of this game will sit atop the Big 10. Michigan State has been on the cusp of a top ten ranking all season. With consecutive wins over Ohio State and Wisconsin, the Spartans, yet again, have a chance to rise to the elite ranks, which will matter come March. Junior Keith Appling (14 PPG, 4 APG) has continued to assume his veteran leadership role. In a game that will be very close, MSU coach Tom Izzo can take solace in knowing that Appling, a point guard who has averaged over 35 minutes per game in Big 10 competition, has only missed three free throws in his last five games.

As for the Hosiers, I have been of the opinion that they have been overrated all season. Their super sophomore forward Cody Zeller (16 PPG, 8 RPG) is the real deal but Indiana only has one signature win, over then #14 North Carolina in November (UNC is not ranked today). They melted in overtime to in-state rival Butler last month and lost to unranked Wisconsin last week.

The Spartans are playing well and with urgency and I have yet to be really sold on an Indiana performance.

Advantage: Michigan State

Appling has some hops, too. 1
2013 NFL Pro Bowl

Standard formations…no blitzing…no strategy…being named to the Pro Bowl is soon going to be like winning a gold glove. It’s an honor, but one day it will have nothing to do with something we will see on the field of play if the product continues to be so bad. What we’ll see on Sunday won’t have much to do with football, either, but if you are jonesing for some pigskin, it’s the only item on the buffet.

If I am going to watch football that doesn't really matter, I'd rather watch the Los Angeles Temptation of the Lingerie Football League. 2

Wednesday, January 30

Happy birthday to me! Yours truly turns 38 on this day. Pickings are a little slim in the sports world, though.

NBA

Miami Heat at Brooklyn Nets

Two of the best teams in the Eastern Conference square off in what could be a preview of the Eastern Conference Finals. Winners of 10 out of their last 11, the Nets (so far) have demonstrated that the controversial decision to fire Head Coach Avery Johnson and replace him with P.J. Carlesimo may have been the right one.

Center Brook Lopez (19 PPG, 7 RPG, 2 BlkPG) and point guard Deron Williams (17 PPG, 8 APG) have been an unstoppable offensive force while power forward Reggie Evens (9 RPG) has made the Nets extremely tough under the glass. LeBron James (27 PPG, 8 RPG, 7 APG) and the defending NBA champion Heat have gotten out to a quiet first place start in the early half of the season. Their Achilles heel has been in the paint and under the glass. With this game being played in Brooklyn and the energy that can be expected with the Heat visiting, I think the Nets will have just a little more in the tank.

Advantage: Nets

Lopez and James have battled under the basket before. 3

Must See Sports – Fourth Weekend of March 2012

Last week, we had to skip Must See because, on Thursday, I didn’t know WHO we must see. With no compelling First or Second Round action in the NCAA Tournament, no particularly compelling NBA action, and no knowledge of who would be in the Third Round, there was not much Must See to write about.

This weekend is a different story. The participants in the Elite Eight will be determined by Sweet Sixteen action tonight and tomorrow.

Get your popcorn ready!

NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament – Regional Semifinals

West Region – (1) Michigan State Spartans vs (4) Louisville Cardinals

Earlier today, I heard this matchup described on ESPN Radio as the “Paisan Bowl” – as in future Hall of Fame coaches Tom Izzo of Michigan State and Rick Pitino of Louisville, both Italian-Americans. In addition to the coaching matchup, I think the matchup of the stars, Draymond Green (16 PPG, 10 RPG) of MSU and point guard Peyton Siva (9 PPG, 6 APG, 2 StlPG) of Louisville, will decide this one.

Both teams are capable. However, the Spartans have been hot and consistent. The Cardinals have had a number of badly timed hiccups this season. I like Michigan State.

Advantage: Michigan State

West Region – (3) Marquette Golden Eagles vs (7) Florida Gators

Regular readers are probably thinking, “Oh boy. He’s going to pick on Florida again!” Florida has improved and gotten hot down the stretch. The question is can the pairing of Florida’s Kenny Boynton (16 PPG, 3 APG) and Erving Walker (12 PPG, 5 APG) match wits with the sheer dominance of Marquette’s defense and post presence of Jae Crowder (17 PPG, 8 RPG).

Marqeutte, on paper, is the better team and, for the last two seasons, I have consistently stated that Florida is great until they run across a better opponent. I do have concerns about the Golden Eagles matching up with Florida in guard play. I think Florida has an opportunity to break through and slay an opponent with a better resume, but like the State of Missouri, they will need to “show me” first.

Advantage: Marquette

East Region – (2) Ohio State Buckeyes vs (6) Cincinnati Bearcats

This is an eagerly awaited intrastate, interconference game between the Buckeyes from the Big Ten and the Bearcats from the Big East. Cicinnnati, behind the power and presence of senior forward Yancy Gates (12 PPG, 9 RPG), has had an impressive run, particularly late in the season. But I think the tandem of Naismith Award candidate Jared Sullinger (18 PPG, 9 RPG) and Will Buford (15 PPG, 5 RPG, 3 APG) of OSU will be too much and the Cincy run stops tonight.

Advantage: Ohio State

Friday, March 23

NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament – Regional Semifinals

South Region – (1) Kentucky Wildcats vs (4) Indiana Hosiers

Do not think for one second that Kentucky Head Coach John Calipari and his team did not circle this date on the calendar and begin licking their chops the moment the brackets were released and they saw Indiana paired up with them in the South Region. The Hosiers handed Kentucky their only regular season loss of the season at Indiana on a last second shot by Christian Watford (12 PPG, 6 RPG), spoiling what had been a perfect season at that time.

I don’t think the Hosiers’ Cinderella story will repeat itself in Atlanta on Friday. Indiana plays good team basketball, but none of their guys are a match for Kentucky’s Anthony Davis (14 PPG, 10 RPG, 5 BlkPG), a Naismith Award finalist and the U.S. Basketball Writers Association’s national player of the year. In addition the Wildcats, whose starting lineup consists mostly of freshmen, have had time to gel since their December meeting with Indiana. Frankly, I don’t think the Hosiers have a chance.

Advantage: Kentucky

The remainder of Must See will be published on Saturday morning, after the Regional Semifinals have concluded.
