Will Smith Out for the Season

New Orleans Saints outside linebacker Will Smith (6.0 sacks, 2 tackles for loss, 1 fumble recovery in 2012) is expected to miss the 2013 NFL season due to a knee injury suffered in Sunday’s preseason game at the Houston Texans. This is a tough break for the Saints. They are a team that has struggled badly on the defensive side of the ball during the past two seasons. Smith was a key pass rushing cog in Defensive Coordinator Rob Ryan’s 3-4 defensive machine. Multiple reports have circulated that the Saints sought potential trades for, essentially, experienced pass rushers with a warm body.

The Times-Picayune reported that the Saints agreed to a trade for eight year veteran San Francisco 49ers linebacker Parys Haralson (21.5 career sacks, 3 forced fumbles in 2012) in exchange for a conditional seventh round draft pick, provided Haralson makes the final cut. Desperate times call for desperate measures. The Saints are replacing a potential Pro Bowler with a serviceable player who would be a backup on most rosters. Still, Haralson is competent and beggars can’t be choosers.

Put your hands together and pray, Who Dat Nation!

Will Smith has 67.5 career sacks.
