For those of you who are not completely ignoring the NCAA
Men’s Basketball Tournament or are not kin to an ostrich, Florida Gulf Coast
University is this year’s Cinderella team. Will they be another Butler from
2010 or George Mason from 2006? Or will the clock strike midnight in the Sweet
16 against the Florida Gators, a team many think is capable of winning the
entire tournament?
If you are reading this blog, chances are you are sports
savvy. If you, you are probably familiar with the cast of characters on ESPN,
including Skip Bayless. I honestly do not understand how this man has made it
as far as he has. His sports takes often don’t meet the tests for logic and
common sense. His on air opinions can be provocative, but there are far better
on air personalities out there who can play the heavy and be more entertaining
than Bayless, whom I find to be a little boring when he isn’t voicing
questionable opinions.
Those of you familiar with Bayless are familiar with his
irrational man-love for New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow. Tebow, one of the
greatest players in the history of college football, is popular because he is a
good guy and a devout Christian. I understand that. The cause of his appeal
does not extend to much of anything he’s done on the field in the NFL. He has a
winning streak bolstered by luck, opportunity and timely execution in late 2011
that resurrected a floundering Denver Broncos season into an AFC West title and a win
in the first round of the playoffs. Great story…no more.
Bayless, naturally, proclaimed Tebow as one of the next
great NFL quarterbacks who could do no wrong. I don’t believe that Bayless
honestly believed that himself, but he said it…repeatedly. Florida Gulf Coast
University is the hot “against all odds” story of this season’s tournament.
Today’s retweet, from Marc Kohn (@KohneysKorner) echoes what many a sports fan and ESPN viewer
may be thinking.
"Tomorrow on ESPN, Skip debates if #FGCU would beat Florida
if Tebow played point guard"
I don't think Tebow will be returning to Denver in this capacity or any other. |
