When Life Hands You Lemons, Make Lemonade

The NCAA handed down harsh, unprecedented sanctions against the Penn State University football program on Monday. Included in those sanctions was a ban from bowl games for four years. Without question, this will deter blue chip prospects from committing to Penn State.

So what is Penn State Head Football Coach Bill O’Brien doing? He’s creating his own bowl game! O’Brien reportedly is seeking to utilize the “Hawai’i exemption”. NCAA teams are permitted to schedule a 13th regular season game if that game is played in Hawai’i, Alaska, or Puerto Rico.

Good for Coach O’Brien. Penn State is facing an all but impossible situation in the coming years. O’Brien is not rolling over and playing dead. He is thinking outside the box. When he is pitching Penn State to a potential recruit the line, “We may not be able to go to the bowl game in Shreveport at the end of the season, but we will be going to Hawai’i for a week every year,” is not a bad component of Plan B.

Keep fighting the good fight, Coach!

In contrast, a trip to Hawaii doesn't sound like a bad alternative.
