It Couldn’t Happen to a Better Guy

The sports world has been loaded with juicy scandals in the past couple of months. The New Orleans Saints brass gets gutted due to Boutnygate, Tim Tebow to the New York Jets, Miami Marlins Ozzie Guillen reached the apex of his foot-in-the-mouth soundbites, Dwyane Wade wants to be paid for playing in the Olympics, and Tiger Woods unleashed his inner 10 year old at the Masters. Now, the University of Arkansas fired Head Football Coach Bobby Petrino following a motorcycle accident in which Petrino’s female passenger was a 25 year old University Athletic Department employee with whom Petrino was admittedly having an inappropriate relationship.

Guillen: "Petrino did what? GOOD! People will stop talking about me! Good! Gooood!"

NOT THE FIRST TIME AND WON’T BE THE LAST

Bobby Petrino’s track record is well known among fans, media members, and football insiders. Petrino is an offensive genius and has shown that he can build a college football program, but will probably not be penning his own edition of “How to Win Friends and Influence People”. In the words of NFL player Antonio Cromartie, that is just the kind of guy Petrino is. What kind of guy? An asshole.

Let’s look at Petrino’s resume off of the sideline. Petrino, former offensive coordinator at Auburn University, became the head coach at Louisville. After one year at Louisville, according to ESPN, Petrino secretly interviewed for the job at Auburn while his former boss and mentor, Tommy Tubberville, was still the head coach. Pretty scummy….

One season after signing a 10 year extension with Louisville, in 2006, Petrino bolted to the NFL to be the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. Bettering one’s self by moving up to being a head coach in the pros is not alarming and is understandable. But after signing a contract just one year prior and declaring, as reported in a USA Today article, “For me and my family, Louisville is home,” it raises an eyebrow.

Petrino began rising to the level of unlikeability needed for induction to the Jerk Hall of Fame in Atlanta in 2007. He snuck away from his responsibilities with the Atlanta Falcons in the darkness of night, mid-season, leaving nothing but a short letter to his team to explain his sudden departure. What a scumbag!

Petrino left to accept the head coaching position at Arkansas. He would be seen at a press conference the following day doing the school’s pig call rally cry as he was introduced. Falcons players, such as universally respected veteran Warrick Dunn (who never said a discouraging word about anyone that I was aware of), threw Petrino under the bus in a public and outspoken manner.

What a douche.... (video from YouTube)

WHY IS ANYONE SURPRISED?

The news that Petrino, who is married with children, was caught having an affair with a smoking hot former female athlete, Jessica Dorrell, is not surprising. Few people would put it past Petrino to have possibly rigged the interview process to get his mistress her job with the university. Deadspin released some information today suggesting that there may have been another mistress among Petrino’s peccadilloes. None of this should make anyone die from shock.

What was surprising is that, as the news of Petrino’s latest indiscretion surfaced, University of Arkansas Athletic Director Jeff Long wasted very little time in dismissing Petrino for his behavior. Many of you may be thinking the clichĂ©, “If I did that at MY job,” …yes, yes! You would have been fired. You can’t coach a major college football team either.

Petrino, left, is in his 50s. Ms. Dorrell, right, is 25. I'm not saying he should have done it, but I understand! 2

GOOD FOR MR. LONG…GOOD LUCK!

Southeastern Conference football is a big money business. Jeff Long took the moral and ethical high ground by firing Petrino. To not fire Petrino would effectively give the coach carte blanche to run amok in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Many an athletic director may privately think, “So what if he runs amok?”

Why would an A.D. think that? Because winning makes money and ensures that directors and other superiors keep their jobs. Bobby Petrino’s Razorbacks went 11-2 last season in the hyper-competitive SEC West, its only losses coming to eventual SEC champion LSU and SEC West division runner up Alabama. Bobby Petrino does not appear to be a very good guy, but he is an outstanding football coach.

Come this fall, fans will not be thinking of Petrino’s indiscretions. They will be focused on the team’s record. Long will have about a one year grace period from the public, due to the unexpected nature of the events leading to Petrino’s dismissal. After that, people will expect the team to quickly be comparably competitive.

Long took a big risk and made a bold statement by firing Petrino, who got what he deserved. Petrino’s teams were the most successful Arkansas teams during Petrino’s four years than any other four year span in decades. Petrino will not be easily replaced on the field. Long can be replaced. Unless he finds the right guy, he will be. No good deed goes unpunished, Mr. Long.

There will be a lot more where this came from in the fall if the Hogs aren't winning. 3
