Fanhood Feud – Joe Saturday vs Joe Sunday

1
Football season is a long way away. Still, college football has begun its spring activities. The NFL is preparing for its draft, even if there are no players in the NFL right now. Football, for the past 20 years, has unequivocally been America’s favorite sport by nearly every objective and subjective measure available.

Football fanhood can be divided into two groups: college football fans and pro football fans. Most college games are played on Saturday and most NFL games are played on Sunday. I like to call fans who prefer the college game, “Joe Saturdays,” and those who prefer the pro game, “Joe Sundays”.

I am under no delusion that there is any comparison, among the masses, as to which faction is larger. The NFL is the President, the Emperor, and the King of Sports Organizations. There is no comparison of any kind – television ratings & revenues, attendance, merchandising, tickets sales & revenues, scientific opinion polls – between the popularity of NCAA football and NFL football in America.

However, Joe Saturdays are a very vocal and passionate minority. Joe Saturdays live for Saturday as much as Joe Sundays live for Sunday. Often, Mr. Saturday uses the action on Sunday and Monday night as a substitute to tie him over until the next week of Saturday action. Joe Sunday certainly bests Joe Saturday in numbers, but Joe Saturday compensates for much of that difference with heated passion.

Joe Saturday leaves it all in the stands. 4
Joe Saturday:
  • Thinks the kids leave it all on the field
  • Thinks the game is pure and uncorrupted by players motivated by money
  • Gets goose bumps every time he hears the team fight song
  • Lives to set up his tailgate on Friday night
  • Thinks the pros are just in it for the money and are overpaid
  • Thinks the coach of his team is a living god
  • Owns at least one mascot themed piece of apparel, like a hat with a clapping pair of tiger paws
  • Thinks that “BCS” is a profanity and wants a playoff system
  • Owns a beer pong table for gameday
  • Sets up a tent at 3:00 am near the broadcast area where ESPN’s College Gameday is on his campus
  • Thinks a 9 hour road trip to a one horse college town, where he tells the inhabitants how much their school sucks, in the middle of nowhere is an awesome weekend!
  • Has a school football uniform or cheerleading outfit, with pom-poms for his toddler
  • Sings along with the band
  • Can’t understand why people get so worked up over the NFL. It’s just a bunch of guys getting paid to play a game!

Joe Saturday loves the scenery. 3
Joe Sunday:
  • Thinks the NFL is a MAN’S GAME!!!
  • Knows where all of the players on his favorite team went to college
  • Is thinking about his next waiver move for his fantasy team as each update rolls in
  • All of his rowdy friends are here on Monday Night!
  • His mood on Monday morning is predictable
  • Owns a dartboard kit, beer mug set, and license plate frame with his team's logo
  • Thinks a $6 beer is a steal
  • Owns a jersey with his favorite player's number and name on it - even if he isn't on the team anymore.
  • His significant other has a similar jersey, in pink
  • Knows how much all of the skill position players get paid and how man years they have remaining on their contracts, but probably couldn’t tell you how much is in his checking account.
  • Thinks NFL Red Zone should consider moving its coverage zone back to the 30 yard line, just in case.
  • Can’t understand why people get so worked up over college games. They’re just kids! They’re not even getting paid to play the game!

The Daily Hat Trick:
  • Editor is a Joe Sunday
  • Understands Joe Saturday and loves college football
  • Would be sorry to lose either one, but has to have the NFL pried from his cold, dead fingers. I have to see the best and the best are in the NFL!
I'm not a Joe Saturday, but I understand!!! 2
